Bay ...
the community where
we live is a small coastal community in the Otago Harbour approx. 10 minutes
drive from Dunedin.
It was a thriving
community in the later half of the nineteenth century when gold was discovered
in Central Otago, and is renowned for its maritime
history of boatbuilders and fishermen. Now it is a quiet community
whose residents comprise people who commute to Dunedin to work, Artists
and a few remaining Fishermen.
Currently the community
is working together to enhance the Bay. Although the bay is highly regarded
and regularly frequented by the population of the greater Dunedin area
there is a need to enhance/expand the walkways, boating, fishing and leisure
facilities in the area. As well as highlight the historical interest
of key landmarks in the area, like some of the
nineteenth century hulks of sailing ships, and original buildings.
There has also been
a considerable amount of local resources put toward replanting the coastal
areas with native Flora.
Though our most extensive
beautification project yet was to clean the beach in the inner bay
of mud, debris and general fuel waste from the existing sand, that had
accumulated over the years. and replace it with clean sand to a depth of
500mm across the entire beach. Taking care to protect and monitor the indigenous
coastal biologies present, - this alone has increased the leisure usage
of the bay tenfold.
We are constantly
monitoring the creeping detrimental environmental effects of our neighbour
"The Port of Otago" and we therefore spend our fair share of time in environmental,
resource consent and local body planning hearings and courts. ...
