TODAYS LESSON !!!

By reading the quotes below you will learn how easy it is to discard an Environmental Court ruling, alienate the people you serve and destroy a beautiful coastal community all at the same time if your job title is 'District Planner'.

QUOTES FROM THE DCC ABOUT FACE LETTER:-

PORT OTAGO LIMITED v DUNEDIN CITY COUNCIL (RMA 908/99)

RMA 908/99 (Height restrictions)
In my earlier letter, I stated that the Council supported the current restriction of 8.5 metres maximum height on the Boiler Point outer reclamation and a height of 12 metres at Back Beach. I noted that this was subject to more detailed landscape assessment and consideration of information to be obtained from Port Otago Limited demonstrating the need for an increase in the maximum height permitted.

The landscape assessment has now been completed and indicates that, while port activities clearly affect the amenity of both Back Beach and Careys Bay, an increase in maximum height to 15 metres will not have an adverse impact on the amenity of either area significantly greater than the impact of activities which could currently be established as permitted activities. The Council is therefore of the view that the current greater restrictions on height applying at Back Beach and Boiler Point compared to the remainder of the Port 1 Zone are not necessary and an increase in maximum height to 15 metres as requested by the referrer is acceptable.
